Modernizing India’s Legal Framework: Changes to IPC, CrPC, and IEA

The Indian Penal Code (IPC) of 1860 is being replaced by the “Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill, 2023.” This new bill reduces the total number of sections from 511 to 356, with 175 sections being amended. Additionally, 8 new sections have been added, and 22 sections have been repealed to streamline and modernize the legal framework.

Similarly, the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) of 1973 will be replaced by the “Bharatiya Nagarik Sanhita, 2023.” This update increases the number of sections from 478 to 533, reflecting the addition of 9 new sections and the replacement of another 9 sections. In total, 160 sections have been changed to better address contemporary needs and improve procedural efficiency.

Moreover, the Indian Evidence Act (IEA) of 1872 will be replaced by the “Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023,” expanding the number of sections from 167 to 170. The new bill includes changes to 23 sections, the addition of 1 new section, and the replacement of 5 sections.These legislative changes are part of a broader effort to update and improve India’s legal framework, making it more relevant to current societal and technological contexts.
